And, on the internet

One thing I did find time to write recently was a letter to Russell Brown of the Hard News blog. And he ran an extract from it, which is always a nice thing. For the record, I wasn't one of the people who mentioned La Haine, but I was thinking of it.

Other than me on the internet, there are two things of note that have happened recently in the "blogosphere".

First is the arrival of the SNAP! Publishing blog which is run in part by my friend Sam. It's a news/analysis blog that discusses New Zealand events from an anarchist perspective. Well written and interesting.

The second is the return to the net of the best music blog I've ever read, hands down: WOEBOT. Matt even did me the honour of listing me in his links section. WOEBOT single handedly turned me onto grime, the musical sound of my headphones this year, and Kanye West (who I never would have given a chance without Matt's passionate endorsement) and generally writes the most interesting and well considered pieces of music analysis I've seen. He also runs dissensus which is the best music board I've ever been to as well.

So keep your rss feeds (try sage for firefox if you need a good one)locked to these ones.

I'm guessing you're 'Melchoir' on dissensus.

Some music blogs I like -

Benn loxo du taccu - mainly West African music but it sneaks south sometimes. ( http://mattgy.net/music )

Largehearted Boy - lots of different things with a U.S. indie slant. ( http://blog.largeheartedboy.com )

WFMU - attached to an indie radio station. Currently features a "44-minute-long MP3 of the legendary Criswell predicting what he predicts best - the future, which is where you and I will spend the rest of our lives." ( http://blog.wfmu.org )

Honey, where you been so long? - early blues. ( http://prewarblues.org/ )

Music for Maniacs - a good source of novelty tunes and "What the fuck?" kind of things ( http://musicformaniacs.blogspot.com )

Good guess!

Those are some cool looking links. While I think of it, if you can be bothered hunting for it, you should check out the post about "desi" on WOEBOT. It's worth reading.

I can see a recent bhangra post but nothing on desi. Is that an older one?

Too quiet in here!
Listen up, a new web business is looking for artists, to host their talent. Thanks to all that reached the launch party at the NYT club on the 11th Nov. It was ram. Pictures will be up on the site. We have had 1.5 million hits in the past month plus we have strong links from Atlanta, New York, to Europe to Tokyo. We wanna build things from the ground upwards so get in contact and let's discuss how we can boost your profile. Also take time to check out the site, join up, swap favours. Step your game up and tell your friends.

Let's just ignore that shall we?

Anyway, on the desi thing I found the page I was looking for:
http://www.woebot.com/movabletype/archives/000470.html

I guess the question, which I should ask about on dissensus, is what's the difference between desi and bhangra?

My understanding of it - which doesn't go all that deep - is that bhangra has its roots in a specific kind of music, peasant music from the Punjab, while 'desi' is a broader term, referring to the South Asian dispora as a whole.

So all bhangra music is desi music, but not all desi music is bhangra music.
